Grants Life Cycle
The Grants Life Cycle provides an overview of the entire resesarch proposal submission and administration process. The Life Cycle helps explain research policies and procedures. It walks you through the challenges of finding funding and applying for and administering sponsored grants and contracts.
The following are some of the pre-award life cycle steps. Regardless of which step you're at, we emphasize communicating early and often to ensure that your planned proposals are successfully submitted.
Common Sponsor Portals
A variety of sponsors have electronic systems for proposal submission and award management. OSP helps to manage UU's accounts and roles for these systems. Additional information on how to obtain acess to various electronic research portals can be found in Electronic Submission & Registration.
NIH eRA Commons
eRA Commons is used to manage NIH grants. The system can be used to track submission progress, view application errors and warnings. Other actions include: Just-In-Time (JIT), No Cost Extensions and progress/project reports.
Obtaining and/or Affiliating an Account
Accounts must be created or affiliated by OSP. User requests for the Principal Investigator (PI) role can be sent to your Sponsored Projects Officer.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Research.gov / Fastlane
FastLane and Research.gov are used to manage NSF grants. These systems are used throughout the grants lifecycle. Actions include proposal submission, file updates and No Cost Extensions.
Due to functionality, OSP requires that NSF submissions go through Fastlane or Reseach.gov and not Grants.gov or Cayuse.
Obtaining and/or Affiliating an Account
New accounts must be created by the user through Research.gov. New and existing accounts must be affiliated with the UU through your account profile. Affiliation requests are automatically forwarded to OSP for approval.
PIs should request the PI role in eRA Commons. PIs will need to complete their Personal Profile.

Vice President for Research (VPR)
The Office of the Vice President for Research has oversight of all research related matters and strives to provide services to faculty and increase the funding available to support research while protecting the University’s interests and assuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. These services are intended to help advance research and are handled through offices that include Sponsored Projects.

The Post Newsletter (formerly Researcher’s Corner) is a valuable resource from the Vice President for Research Office designed to communicate useful information to the University of Utah research community.
Research Deans
The Office of the Vice President for Research provides support for these activities and can help you find the appropriate Research Dean and/or interdisciplinary research opportunity.

Systems/Interfaces
The following systems are commonly used at the proposal development, proposal submission, and post-award administration stages. If you need help accessing or navigating any of them, please ask OSP or utilize the chat feature on our website.
eProposal
eProposal is an OSP system, via CIS, that generates each Document Summary Sheet (DSS). eProposal collects data and approvals, identifies compliance issues, and etablishes the base record for proposal and award project/s.
Cayuse S2S
Cayuse, via CIS, is an OSP managed program for system-to-system proposal submissions in response to many, if not most, federal opportunities that would otherwise be submitted via Grants.gov.
eAward
eAward is an OSP system, via CIS, that was created to coordinate post-award administration workflow and increase transparency.
