Funding Sources & Opportunities
4.1 University Intramural Support for Research
There are several sources of research funding within the University that comprise the Intramural Funding Programs.
4.1.1 Research Instrumentation Fund
The Research Instrumentation Fund is to be used for equipment purchases only. Funds can be requested to support the replacement/upgrade of, or new purchase of major sophisticated research instruments. Criteria used to evaluate proposals include likely impact of funding on scholarship productivity, enhanced competitiveness to result from an award, increased extramural funding to result from an award, and other factors which demonstrate benefit to the University. Preference is given to multi-user infrastructure instrumentation.
4.1.2 University of Utah Research Foundation (UURF) Funding
There are several sources of support for faculty research and scholarly projects available from University resources. The UURF administers funds for the following programs:
4.1.2.1 Interdisciplinary Research Initiative
The Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (IRI) is designed to produce use-inspired research and outcomes that will address national priorities, global competitiveness, and strong economic futures. Proposals must be aligned with one or more of the 24 emerging priority areas outlined in the VPR strategic plan.
4.1.2.2 Faculty Small Grant Program (FSGP)
The Faculty Small Grant Program (FSGP) provides grants of up to $10,000 over 1 year to support scholarly publications and creative research.
4.1.2.3 Faculty Fellow Awards (FFA)
The Faculty Fellow Awards (FFA) provide a semester of full release time (from teaching and administrative tasks) at full salary to eligible faculty for scholarly or creative research projects.
4.1.2.4 Distinguished Research Awards
The Distinguished Research Award (DRA) is a prestigious faculty award designed to recognize outstanding achievements in research by three University of Utah faculty each year.
4.1.2.5 Research Instrumentation Fund (RIF)
The Research Instrumentation Fund (RIF) provides support to faculty and core facilities necessary research instrumentation purchases and upgrades/replacements.
4.1.2.6 1U4U Collaborative Seed Grant Program
The 1U4U Collaborative Seed Grant Program supports cross-campus/cross-disciplinary research teams to solve the greatest challenges
facing our local, national, and global communities. The goal of 1U4U is to incentivize
researchers from different disciplines to collaborate.
