1.3 Department Chair

The Department Chair is responsible for maintaining awareness of all research and sponsored activities conducted within their Department. All activities must be reviewed and approved by the Department Chair (or their designee) in eProposal through the Document Summary Sheet (DSS) before the proposal is officially received by OSP.

The Department Chair's approval and signature on the DSS:

  1. Confirms that the proposed research or sponsored activity aligns with the department's short- and long-range goals;
  2. Affirms that the applicant meets the University's eligibility requirements to serve as a principal investigator (PI) or Co-principal investigator (co-PI); 
  3. Affirms that the PI or co-PI has the appropriate expertise, available time, and capacity to carry out the proposed scope of work;
  4. Acknowledges awareness of the PI’s resource needs, including - but not limited to - space, materials, staffing, cost-sharing commitments, and any hazards associated with the activity; 
  5. Acknowledges awareness of any potential conflicts of interest and commits to managing, eliminating, or minimizing those conflicts in accordance with the University's Conflict of Interest Committee, Conflict of Interest Policy, and applicable federal regulations; 
  6. Commits to meeting any department-specific requirements if the proposal is funded, including cost-sharing commitments, and ensures that these resources will be in place prior to award
  7. Commits to ensuring completion of the project within the department if the PI becomes unable or unwilling to fulfill project obligations. This includes addressing any over-expenditures, inappropriate expenses, sponsor non-payment issues, and delinquent reporting.
