8.3 Insurance/Risk Management
When a Principal Investigator works on an approved grant or contract and stays within the scope of work of the agreement or contract, the University provides insurance. All contracts should be carefully reviewed by both OSP and the principal investigator to limit liability and delineate the University's and the sponsor's responsibilities. All sponsored research conducted at the University is governed by the Utah Governmental Immunity Act which protects the University up to certain insurance limits provided by law. If the sponsor requires more coverage than is normally carried by the University, then it is the sponsor's responsibility to provide the additional coverage. For more information, contact the University's Risk and Insurance Management Department.
For Principal Investigators who are physicians at the University Medical Center, the University has a self-insurance plan including a medical malpractice trust fund that covers the PI and other staff up to $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 aggregates.
