Award Acceptance

8.3 Insurance/Risk Management

When a Principal Investigator (PI) conducts activities within the approved scope of a sponsored project and in accordance with University policy and applicable laws, the University provides insurance coverage consistent with its established risk-management framework.

All sponsored agreements are reviewed by the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) - often in consultation with Risk and Insurance Management, and other relevant offices - to ensure that responsibility, liability, and insurance obligations are clearly defined and appropriately allocated between the University and the sponsor. Investigators should review terms related to risk and liability with OSP to ensure mutual understanding of project responsibilities.

Sponsored research conducted at the University is governed by the Utah Governmental Immunity Act, which provides statutory protections and limits on liability for the University and its employees acting within the scope of their official duties. If a sponsor seeks insurance coverage or liability terms beyond the coverage customarily provided by the University, such requirements must be reviewed and approved through OSP and Risk and Insurance Management. In such cases, the sponsor may be responsible for providing or arranging additional coverage.

Investigators with questions regarding insurance coverage, liability provisions, or risk-related terms should consult the University's Risk and Insurance Management office through OSP during the award negotiation process.
